OIG Monitoring Telehealth Fraud and Abuse

Principal Deputy Inspector General Grimm discussed the fact that the Office of Inspector General of HHS is conducting "significant oversight" over telehealth during the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE).  There were broad flexibilities added in response to the PHE, and part of OIG's work is to help provide information about which flexibilities should be made permanent.  Ms. Grimm specifically also distinguished the difference between "telefraud" vs. "telehealth fraud".  It appears both will continue to be investigated and monitored.  Hopefully, by the end of the year, the public will see OIGs work products based on their oversight of telehealth.

It's important to continue to monitor changes and ensure that telehealth services are being provided in a compliant manner.

It is important that new policies and technologies with potential to improve care and enhance convenience achieve these goals and are not compromised by fraud, abuse, or misuse. OIG is conducting significant oversight work assessing telehealth services during the public health emergency.
